The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) was initially founded in 1917, as the representative national body of the Architects in the country and currently has more than 20,000 members. The Institute plays a major role in promoting the profession of architecture by uniting the Architects of India in fellowship under one umbrella, to promote the aesthetic, scientific and practical competence of the profession - both in Education and Practice.
The institute retains a rich history, built through myriad stories of toils and influence of architectural education, of the rebirth and growth of an almost forgotten profession, of struggles for existence and the need to have contextual meaning and value, and experiments towards ushering a newer era of architecture in the country. As a result, the institute has secured a coveted place in India’s reawakening, in the sphere of Architecture. The institute’s history is also replete with the visions of people, who held the tenets of architecture in high ideal, thus laying the foundation of a vibrant future for the architectural profession in the country.
Today, IIA is proudly represented on national, as well as international committees and communities, related to architecture, art and the building industry. The institute is affiliated to International Union of Architects (UIA), Commonwealth Association of Architects (CAA), Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA) and South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation of Architects (SAARCH).
As of 2012, IIA has 17 chapters representing 5 Regions - North, South, East, West and Central - supported by 51 offices / centers. The institute has appointed 18 boards and committees to oversee its interests and activities.
